Director, Special Projects (R&D, Section 199)

 

S&P Global is seeking a Director in the Tax Department with the primary responsibility for the documentation and calculation of the R&D Credit and Section 199 deduction.

This individual will also assist in the calculation of the Company’s global effective tax rate, where by providing projections/estimates for the R&D Credit / Section 199 in accordance with ASC 740 annually.

 

Responsibilities:

    •  Calculate research tax credit and conduct research tax credit interviews with applicable project managers for audit documentation purposes
    • Calculate Section 199 manufacturing deduction

    • Prepare R&D credit claims to include with the tax filing 1120/1065

    • Prepare Section 199 deduction documentation to include with the US Tax Return filings (1120/1065)

    • Develop quantitative and qualitative documentation to support research credit claims based on facts and circumstances

    • Interviewing appropriate individuals within our divisions to understand the business and R&D undertaken

    • Manage R&D Tax Credit documentation, including calculation of credit as well as research of tax statutes and case law to maximize R&D Tax Credit benefit

    • Interviewing technical personnel and reviewing memoranda to support the credits and incentive opportunities. Involved in technical discussions with engineering teams to evaluate whether projects qualify for the R&D credit

    • Documenting the business activities, R&D undertaken and methodologies used to compile the R&D claims

    • Managing federal credits and incentives opportunities including research and development tax credit/deduction analyses, Section 199 deduction, and other potential federal credit incentive service offerings.

    • Assist with IRS Examination of R&D Credit Claims and Section 199 Deduction as needed

    • Actively seek ways to utilize technology to support the tax function and make processes and data gathering more efficient. Be a technical resource 

    • Perform tax research

  

Additional responsibilities:

    •  Monitor changes in tax law, including analysis of legislative efforts, regulatory pronouncements and judicial developments
    • Assist with special projects including process and technology improvements aimed at streamlining compliance reporting

    • Leverage and collaborate, when applicable, with external tax advisors

    • The Director of R&D/Section 199 will be responsible to prepare, document, obtain and defend (if necessary) S&P Global’s R&D Credit which is approximately $7million of credit annually since 2010.

    • The Director of R&D/Section 199 will be responsible to prepare, document, obtain and defend (if necessary) S&P Global’s Section 199 deduction for Software which is approximately an $8million tax benefit ($25million deduction) annually since 2010.

    • Develop quantitative and qualitative documentation to support research credit claims  and Section 199 deduction based on facts and circumstances

    • Research of tax statutes and case law to maximize R&D Tax Credit ad Section 199 benefit

    • Interviewing technical personnel and reviewing memoranda to support the credits and incentive opportunities. Involved in technical discussions with engineering teams to evaluate whether projects qualify for the R&D credit

    • Identify key division contacts to discuss financial and software features and functionality

    • Understand revenue, direct costs by product and qualifying software

    • Review features and functionality of software components

 

Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, engineering, technology, or related field (Master's Degree preferred)

    • 5+ years of public accounting experience in tax

    • Tax compliance experience

    • Experience in Research Tax Credit (R&D Credit), Section 199

    • Top quality research and analytical skills on technical matters

    • Proficient using Microsoft Excel and Access and data mining tools

    • Excellent project management, analytical, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills including the ability to interpret and document complex technical information in a manner which is understandable by a lay person

    • Ability to multi-task and complete assignments within required time constraints and deadlines.
