The Role: Platts seeks a Writer, North America Power. This subject-matter expert in power and coal markets will produce news, analysis and other content leveraging Platts’ in-house markets and analytics resources. The right candidate will actively engage with the industry to learn the most important issues facing market participants.


The Location: Houston, Texas 

The Team: Platts is a leader in energy market news, pricing, and analysis and is driving innovation in fusing news with analytics. The team is collaborative, curious and comfortable sharing what they know with the markets.


The Impact: You’ll produce differentiated, thought-provoking stories and analysis to feed the highly regarded Megawatt Daily, Coal Trader and other Platts products. This position is responsible for generating content ideas and contributing to print and digital media.


What is in it for you: Build cross-commodity subject matter expertise in areas like capacity markets, utility operations, coal market and the renewables space. There will also be developmental opportunities associated with being a member of a strong news team.


Responsibilities: 

  • Create in-depth content focusing on key developments in power and coal markets
  • Interface with the Platts markets and analytics teams to enhance stories with proprietary data
  • Liaise with production team to create graphics that enhance news and analysis pieces
  • Attend conferences and company meetings to learn about the most important issues facing market participants


What We're looking For:  We are looking for someone who is experienced in, and curious about, energy and coal markets. If you're right for this role, you'll be inquisitive, conscientious, an effective communicator. You'll love this job because you'll be in a dynamic environment where market-moving changes occur every day, surrounded by high-energy individuals who are enthusiastic about covering markets and regulation, spotting key trends and reporting about those trends to our curious customers. 


Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor degree required.  Journalism, Economics, Business and/or Finance
  • 3+ years writing about commodity or energy markets, preferably power
  • Analytical skills with proficiency in Excel


Preferred Qualifications:

Understanding of electricity and/or coal markets including unregulated/regulated market structures, different generation types including renewables, and emerging technologies. The role requires a highly motivated individual with great interpersonal skills and a willingness to engage frequently with industry, market and government sources.
